Bamboo as a Sustainable Building Material—Culm Characteristics and Properties

Abstract: Bamboo culm is a renewable and lightweight material with high strength, particularly tensile strength. It is well accepted that bamboo culms have played a significant role in architecture because of their sustainable contribution. The culm characteristics and properties of three-year-old bamboo from five species (Dendrocalamus asper, Dendrocalamus sericeus, Dendrocalamus membranaceus, Thyrsostachys oliveri, and Phyllostachys makinoi) were investigated. The results show that each bamboo species has different cu… Show more

“…Smart home technologies can also help people to meet the environmental requirements (for example, to reduce CO 2 emissions or to help households to function at a zero-emission mode) [15,16]. Another way might be the innovative industrial use of biomass (such as bamboo) as key "green" material-this kind of biomass can be used in order to mitigate and reduce the CO 2 emissions [17][18][19].…”

“…The next step was to calculate the load capacity of the stalk, expressed as the maximum stress, corresponding to the destruction of the test sample during the compres-sion test (Figure 4). The value of the bearing capacity was determined from the equation [57,60,65,[68][69][70][71][72][73][74]:…”

“…From the different materials available, bamboo-a group of perennial grass with large woody culm encompassing 1662 species with 121 genera-has increasingly attracted attention as an interesting material, including single bamboo fibres and bamboo strips, to replace conventional construction and other materials [5]. Bamboo products have been suggested as having a significant positive environmental impact and distinctive social and economic benefits [6] by calling for innovative approaches to using natural materials, triggering eco-innovation, and promoting the circular economy [7]. The use of bamboo requires creativity and reopening to natural materials, which have been proposed as foundational to the economy of the future as they reflect the changes taking place due to innovative ideas and solutions as well as successive industrial evolution and technological progress [8,9].…”
