Bandwidth and Efficiency Enhancement of Rectangular Patch Antenna for SHF Applications

Abstract: The microstrip patch antenna is used in various communication applications including cellular phones, satellites, missiles, and radars, due to its several attractive features such as small size and weight, low cost, and easy fabrication. The microstrip patch antenna consists of a top radiating patch, a bottom ground plane, and a dielectric substrate in between. The patch can have different shapes, the rectangular patch being the most commonly used. In practice, the microstrip antenna suffers from narrow bandwi… Show more

“…Considering that rectangular patch antennas are widely used over other structures [43][44][45], the proposed antenna is based on a rectangular patch slotted with two identical hammer slots and a single rectangular slot placed between them. The substrate used was a Rogers RT5880 having the following dimensions: 20 mm length, 16.5 mm width, and 0.508 mm thickness.…”

“…It was able to achieve an efficiency of 0.02129 dB with a bandwidth of 3161 MHz. By incorporating various configurations (rectangular and U) of single and double slots into the patch, as well as inset feed and coaxial feed methods, a basic rectangular patch antenna was developed to boost bandwidth and efficiency (Nahas 2019).…”

“…Corner truncation also ensures the circular polarization of the antenna. Figure 1 The microstrip antenna dimensions are based on standard mathematical models inspired by the literature for the design of the MPA [15][16]. In order to analyze the performance of the antenna, certain parameters need to be taken into account, such as the return loss S11, gain, and directivity.…”
