Bandwidth-Enhanced Circularly Polarized Crescent-Shaped Slot Antenna via Circular-Patch Loading

Abstract: This paper presents the crescent-shaped slot antenna loading of a circular patch that greatly enhances a 3 dB axial-ratio (AR) bandwidth. A bent feeding line was introduced and attached to a 50- Ω microstrip feed line to achieve circular polarization operation. By loading the circular patch into a crescent-shaped slot at a proper position, the 3 dB AR bandwidth is considerably broadened. An antenna prototype with overall dimensions of 50.8 × 50.8 × 0.5 mm 3 is experimentally demonstrated. Measurem… Show more

“…An embedded island is placed inside the rectangular slot as shown in Figure 3(a) for reflection coefficient |S 11 |, bandwidth, and size improvement [21][22][23][24]. The slot antenna is fed by a microstrip feedline at the bottom layer as shown in Figure 3(b).…”

“…Step 1: Design the truncated corner square patch with operation in the low-frequency band. The size W p will have a strong effect on the operating frequency, and it is initially defined by Equation (1). Meanwhile, the AR value is tuned by the corner truncation parameter, d.…”

“…In recent years, many researchers have focused on designing antennas with circularly polarized (CP) radiation [1,2] rather than linear polarization [3]. The benefits of adopting CP radiation in antennas have been illustrated for multipath interference reduction and polarization mismatch mitigation.…”

“…This small difference in radii of these circular patches helps in the generation of two orthogonal field components with a quadrature phase and the same amplitude for CP behaviour. To increase the 3-dB ARBW (up to 84.40 % in the frequency range of 1.89-4.65 GHz) and beamwidth (more than 75°), Trinh-Van et al [11] presented a crescent-shaped slot antenna. The designed antenna is energized by a twisted feeding line connected with a microstrip feed line of 50 Ω.…”
