Bandwidth on demand for inter-data center communication

Abstract: Cloud service providers use replication across geographically distributed data centers to improve end-to-end performance as well as to offer high reliability under failures. Content replication often involves the transfer of huge data sets over the wide area network and demands high backbone transport capacity. In this paper, we discuss how a Globally Reconfigurable Intelligent Photonic Network (GRIPhoN) between data centers could improve operational flexibility for cloud service providers. The proposed GRIPho… Show more

“…In 2010, GRIPhoN (globally reconfigurable intelligent photonic network) was proposed as an advanced ROADM architecture able to improve the performance and operational flexibility of optical transport networks [16], and was then extensively studied to provide bandwidth on demand for inter-DC connectivity through backbone optical networks [17]. Moreover, optical circuit switching has been proposed to combine both inter-and intra-DC connectivity for long-lived flows [18].…”

“…The authors in [17] study the cost savings obtained by inter-connecting the DCs belonging to a federation. In [18], the authors propose an architecture to provide dynamic bandwidth on demand over WDM; in case of failure, dynamic restoration is used. A specific module running on top of ABNO, named as Application Service Orchestrator (ASO), was first proposed in [19] to coordinate DC and network elastically aiming at improving resource utilization and save costs.…”

“…However, as WAN usage increases, network owners [15], [5] offer Bandwidth-on-Demand services, especially for r-datacenter applications [1]. Additionally, the WAN may take up to 40% of the total IT energy cost, and is expected to continue growing as demand for distributed data processing continues to rise [17] and as the server hardware becomes more energy efficient [11].…”
