Barium effect on germination, plant growth, and antioxidant enzymes in Cucumis sativus L. plants

Abstract: Barium (Ba) is a nonessential element that can cause several deleterious effects in most organisms. Elevated Ba concentrations can be toxic for plants and may affect growth and disturbances in homeostasis. This study aimed to evaluate the Ba stress, the plant‐tolerance limits, and the detoxification strategy adopted by Cucumis sativus L. The effect of Ba on seed's germination and vegetative development of this species was evaluated. For germination test, different Ba concentrations were used (0, 200, 500, 1,00… Show more

“…Moreover, previous studies have shown that exposure to TME stress disturbs the water status in plants. For instance, in cucumber plants treated with Al [ 24 ] and Ba [ 33 ], the water content in the roots increased compared to the control, which agrees with our findings. Other studies revealed that in soybean, Ba treatment did not affect the water potential or relative water content [ 9 ].…”

“…Generally, the inhibitory effect of Ba on growth, as well as the development alteration, are the most obvious symptoms of its phytotoxicity. Similar findings were obtained in cucumber plants subjected to Ba stress, where the dry biomass production showed a remarkable decrease [ 33 ]. Equally, the stress caused by Ba exposure inhibited the growth of the shoots in Cakile maritima [ 19 ].…”

“…In plants, metallic ions may have a different distribution rate, so some TME are immobilized and accumulated in root tissues such as Cd (Labidi et al., 2021), Fe (Roshani et al., 2014), As (Raab et al., 2007) and Al (Fan et al., 2020). Other cations, like Ba, are more freely transported to the aerial parts (Sleimi et al., 2021). Actually, TME can be translocated differently within the plant (Raab et al., 2007).…”

“…Barium (Ba) is a toxic chemical used in various industries, such as oil well drilling, production of rubber and paper, reworks, manufacture of glass, paints and pigments, composition of batteries, and the composition of uorescent lamps, and it causes many disturbances in plant development (Sleimi et al 2021). Silicon (Si) has important applications in computers and the production of silicone polymers.…”
