Bark Extract of Lantana camara in 1M HCl as Green Corrosion Inhibitor for Mild Steel

Abstract: Lantana camara, an invasive species that adversely affects habitant, bioregions and environment has been studied as corrosion inhibitor. Methanolic extract of barks of Lantana camara in 1 M hydrochloric acid was tested as corrosion inhibitor on mild steel using potentiodynamic polarization technique. The corrosion inhibition efficiency of extract varied with concentration of extract and immersion of time. The inhibition was found to increase with increase in concentration of the extract. The polarization behav… Show more

“…There is no dearth of literature dealing with plant extract as a corrosion inhibitor for MS. 1,[3][4][5][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] Nepal is rich in highaltitude endemic plants. Extracts of several high altitude plants of Nepal are found to be effective corrosion inhibitors for MS in acidic media, such as Equisetum hyemale, 9 Berberis aristata, 17 Lanata camara, 18 Euphorbia royleana, 19 Pogostemon benghalensis, 20,21 Jatropha curcas, 22 Eucalyptus globulus. 23 In this study, Artemisia vulgaris (family: Asteraceae), a high-altitude plant, is studied as a green corrosion inhibitor for MS in an acidic medium.…”

“…Mild steel (MS) is a well-known ferrous alloy with 0.15-0.30% C, 0.4% Si, 0.7-0.9% Mn, 0.04% S, 0.04% P and is an excellent material used in structural and construction applications. The affluent use of MS as construction materials is because of its outstanding mechanical properties, ease of fabrication, excellent weldability, and low purchasing cost [1,2]. However, it has low corrosion resistance, especially in acidic environments [3].…”

“…Mild steel (MS) is a ferrous alloy and the best-preferred construction material due to its availability, excellent mechanical properties, ease of fabrication, and low purchasing cost [1][2][3]. However, corrosion of MS is a serious concern, especially in acidic environments such as petrochemical, chemical plants, gasoline pipelines, and processes such as acid pickling, de-scaling,…”
