Barrier Access Control Using Sensors Platform and Vehicle License Plate Characters Recognition

Abstract: The paper proposes a sensors platform to control a barrier that is installed for vehicles entrance. This platform is automatized by image-based license plate recognition of the vehicle. However, in situations where standardized license plates are not used, such image-based recognition becomes non-trivial and challenging due to the variations in license plate background, fonts and deformations. The proposed method first detects the approaching vehicle via ultrasonic sensors and, at the same time, captures its i… Show more

“…The general process of automatic number plate recognition can be summarized in several well-defined steps [ 9 , 10 ]. Each step involves a different set of algorithms and/or considerations: Vehicle image capture: This step has a critical impact on the subsequent steps since the final result is highly dependent on the quality of the captured images.…”

“…In the context of image, the information content is represented by the pixel intensity values that range from 0 to where . The histogram of pixel intensity values [ 22 ] represents the number of pixels per intensity value as shown in Equation ( 1 ). Each bin in this histogram gives the count of that particular intensity value as .…”

“…A typical AVLPR system consists of three stages: detection or localization of the region of interest (i.e., the license plate from the image), character extraction from the license plate, and recognition of those characters [18][19][20].…”
