Barrier-Free Wheelchair with a Mechanical Transmission

Abstract: Wheelchairs are an important means of transportation for the elderly and disabled. However, the movement of wheelchairs on long curbs and stairs is restricted. In this study, a wheelchair for climbing stairs was developed based on a mechanical transmission system that rotates the entire driving part through a link structure and an actuator to change the speed. The first mode drives the caterpillar, and the second mode drives the wheels. When driving on flat ground, it uses landing gears and wheels, and when cl… Show more

“…To improve user convenience, various technological research is being undertaken on electric wheelchairs that can climb stairs. Chung-Ang University's Robotics Engineering Laboratory researched and developed a wheelchair that can climb stairs using a link structure and a mechanical transmission system that rotates the entire driving part through an actuator to change speed [5]. The first mode is driven by a caterpillar, while the second uses wheels.…”

“…In this study, one of the problems of the electric wheelchair [5] introduced earlier was solved using two motors by controlling the position of the front wheel landing gear using a linear actuator, however, this type of drive mode switching is not very reliable. The reason is the synchronization of the two actuators connected to the landing gear and the heavy load placed on the landing gear.…”

“…(27,28) MRs with multiwheel or track structures have been found to be effective for assisting robots in climbing steps. (29)(30)(31)(32) Baishya et al collated and analyzed various existing types of step-climbing robot, such as the leggy type, track type, hybrid leggy-track type, and two-wheel and three-wheel cluster types, and provided a qualitative comparison of their advantages and disadvantages. (32) The four-wheeled robot equipped with Mecanum wheels, (33)(34)(35) driven by four independent servomotors, is capable of moving in any direction on a plane without requiring the prior rotational adjustment of the robot body.…”

“…The locomotive function of the wheelchair is strongly dependent on its structure and was developed towards reducing weight and size [5], strengthening the frame [6] and adjusting the motion control function depending on the person's disability [7]. Structural improvement increasing the safety of movement [8,9] and systems facilitating manual propulsion of a wheelchair (e.g. through the use of gears) are also subject to research and analysis [10].…”
