Barriers and facilitators systematic reviews in health: A methodological review and recommendations for reviewers

Abstract: Background: Systematic reviews cataloguing the barriers to and facilitators of various outcomes are increasingly popular, despite criticisms of this type of review on philosophical, methodological, and practical grounds. The aims of this review are to appraise, analyze, and discuss the reporting and synthesis practices used in recently published barriers and facilitators reviews in health services research. Methods: All English-language peer-reviewed systematic reviews that synthesized research on barriers and… Show more

“…Improving knowledge to screening among women facilitates CCS uptake while the lack of it represents a barrier. While these factors may represent key targets for intervention design, their differential impact across various contexts have been carefully considered [ 116 ]. Furthermore, the experience of different facilitators may have a greater influence on CCS uptake in a setting where barriers are commonly experienced by women.…”

“…Thirdly, the top barriers and facilitators identified in this review was based on publication numbers, which are dependent on previous researchers’ study interest, as well as questionnaire or interview design, where selected factors may be explored more frequently. Nevertheless, this remains a common methodology employed to assess the importance of factors identified in barriers and facilitator reviews, especially when no acceptable standard practice guideline is available at present [ 116 ]. Lastly, the heterogeneity among studies limits us from assessing the effect size of each barrier or facilitator on CCS uptake.…”

“…There is no consensus on the definitions for “facilitator” or “barrier” in the context of physical activity, but both can be described as engagement factors related to behavior change, where facilitators are factors that enable, and barriers are factors that inhibit, participation [ 11 , 12 ]. Similarly, physical activity and sport can be difficult to define.…”

“…Based on thematic analysis of the facilitators and barriers of WBL as identified in the studies included, themes and subthemes were developed, after which they were translated into a model. [33] To build the model, we found inspiration from the WBL framework of Manley et al (6). To the best of our knowledge, there is no existing WBL model for caregivers in the NH context.…”
