Baryons as non-topological chiral solitons

Abstract: The present review gives a survey of recent developments and applications of the NambuJona-Lasinio model with N f = 2 and N f = 3 quark flavors for the structure of baryons. The model is an effective chiral quark theory which incorporates the SU(N f ) L ⊗SU(N f ) R ⊗U(1) V approximate symmetry of Quantum chromodynamics. The approach describes the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and dynamical quark mass generation. Mesons appear as quarkantiquark excitations and baryons arise as non-topological solitons wi… Show more

“…Several models have been constructed in this spirit to implement the coupling of quarks to the pion and applied to nucleon form factors, from the cloudy bag model [550][551][552], the chiral quark models of Refs. [553][554][555][556], the chiral quark soliton model [348,[557][558][559], and the light-front quark-diquark model of Ref. [560].…”

“…At large N c the nucleon is heavy and can be viewed as N c "valence" quarks bound by a self-consistent pion field (the "soliton") [Dia88]. A successful description of static properties of baryons, such as mass splittings, axial constants, magnetic moments, FFs, has been achieved (typically at the 30 % level or better, see [Chr96] for a review of early results). After reproducing masses and decay constants in the mesonic sector, the only free parameter left to be fixed in the baryonic sector is the constituent quark mass.…”

“…The NJL model possesses solitonic solutions in the B=1 sector which can be viewed as a mean-field description of the ground-state baryons. On this basis the phenomenology of ground-state baryons could be reproduced quite well [7,8].…”
