Basal cell carcinoma of the nipple in male patients with gastric cancer recurrence: report of a case

Abstract: Although basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common dermatological malignancy arising from sun exposed skin, BCC of the nipple is extremely rare. To our knowledge only 34 cases have been reported. We report a 78-year-old man who was undergoing chemotherapy for liver metastasis of gastric cancer 1 year after surgery. The chief complaint was exudation and oozing from the nipple. A mass lesion was palpable and detected on mammography and enhanced computed tomography, and atypical cells were detected on cytolog… Show more

“…[22][23][24][25] Importantly, several studies suggest an increased incidence of metastases for BCC of the nipple; as a result, SLN biopsies are performed in some patients with nipple BCC. [26][27][28][29] Cutaneous BCC may display many growth patterns including buds of basaloid epithelium at the base of the epidermis, tumor cell nodules of varying size, or trabecular aggregates of tumor cells dissecting through the collagen. The margin of the tumor with the surrounding stroma displays peripheral palisading, cleft-like spaces, and a hyaluronic acid-rich mucinous stroma.…”

“…6 However BCCs located on the NAC have been considered to be more aggressive with a metastatic rate of 9.1% 11.5%. 2,7 The higher propensity of metastasis in this location is possibly due to the rich network of lymphatic capillaries in the subareolar plexus that provides an easy route for tumor spread.…”

“…Since its first description by Robinson in 1893 1 , there are only 39 reported cases of BCCs of the NAC in the English literature 2,3 . Of these 25 are male and only 14 are female.…”
