Basal cell carcinoma of the eyelid in Finland during 1953−97

Abstract: ABSTRACT.Purpose: To study the incidence of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of the eyelid in Finland. Methods: We studied 6241 cases of BCC of the eyelid reported to the nationwide Finnish Cancer Registry during 1953-97. We determined the age-and sexspecific incidence rates and overall rates adjusted for age to the world standard population, and social class-and occupation-specific standardized incidence ratios, with the total Finnish population as reference. Results: The incidence rates of BCC of the eyelid varied … Show more

“…The age-standardized incidence of malignant eyelid tumors in our study is lower than those reported elsewhere, including in Taiwan [8], Singapore [14], Finland [16], and the United States [1]. It has been suggested that the different incidence of eyelid cancers among countries may be because of variations in skin types, geographical latitudes, health behavior (for example avoidance of sun exposure), and disease awareness and surveillance [8].…”

“…Despite these variations, incidence of malignant eyelid tumors is reported to be growing worldwide [8,14,16]. This increasing incidence was also apparent in our cohort, with a rise from 0.6 per million in 1997 to 2.3 per million in 2009.…”

“…Skin cancers are predominantly seen in Caucasians; therefore, it is not surprising that the incidence of eyelid cancers is also the highest in the white population 3 4. Established risk factors for skin cancer include exposure to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation, Fitzpatrick's type I and II skin types and advancing age 5…”

“…It is the most common skin cancer of the eyelid accounting for 80-90% of all cases [2][3][4] . In Finland, the incidence of BCC of the eyelid more than doubled during the years from 1953 to 1997 [5] . Different subtypes occur in different body areas.…”
