Baseline Na–Li countertransport and risk of hypertension in children: a 10-year prospective study in Hanzhong children

Abstract: Sodium-lithium countertransport (Na-Li CT) is associated with blood pressure (BP) and in many cross-sectional investigations and some longitudinal studies, essential hypertension has been proposed as a biochemical marker or predictor of hypertension risk in adults. The present study investigated prospectively whether baseline Na-Li CT rate was an index of increased risk of future development of hypertension in children. At baseline visit in 1987 of the Hanzhong Children Hypertension Study comprising 4000 schoo… Show more

“…In all of these, higher adiposity was associated with higher BP or odds of hypertension. This association was observed in cross‐sectional studies ( n = 46) , and also in prospective studies ( n = 9) . Results were mostly consistent across study type (i.e.…”

“…Familial characteristics such as parental or family history of hypertension resulted in higher BP in children in six cross‐sectional studies , and one longitudinal study . Likewise, a genetic risk score (calculated from a discovery sample using single nucleotide polymorphisms) prospectively explained only 1.4% of the variance in DBP, and 0.8% of the variance in SBP .…”

“…In March and April 1987, the cohort of Hanzhong Adolescent Hypertension Study was established on the basis of a baseline survey on 4,623 adolescents aged 6-15 years in over 20 schools in three towns, namely, Qili, Laojun, and Shayan, in Hanzhong, Shaanxi, China [20,21]. Using an isometric sampling method [22], we randomly selected every tenth subject (K = 10) from the large cohort and created a small cohort of 463 subjects.…”

“…1 Abnormalities in the transmembrane transport system of sodium have been proposed as a factor that might be the phenotypic expression of coaggregation of hypertension and lipid abnormalities. 3 Elevated red cell sodium-lithium countertransport (Na + /Li + CT) activity has been demonstrated in patients with essential hypertension, [4][5][6] insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus, 7,8 as well as with hyperlipidemia. 9 Na + / Li + CT activity has been found to correlate significantly with several plasma lipid components, such as total cholesterol, trigly cerides (TG) (positive correlation), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (inverse correlation), [9][10][11] and can be modulated by lipid-lowering strategies, including exercise, dietary intervention, and fibrates.…”
