The fruits of Cornus mas and Cornus officinalis have been known and appreciated in folk medicine for years and have a high biological value, which is mainly connected with their polyphenols and iridoids content. However, hybrids of C. mas × C. officinalis have not been investigated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the iridoids, anthocyanins, and flavonols content, and antioxidant capacity of Cornus mas, Cornus officinalis, and C. mas × C. officinalis. Iridoids and flavonoids were quantified by the High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) method. Antioxidant capacity (AC) was measured using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH•), 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethyl benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS•+), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) tests. Total phenolic content (TPC) was evaluated using the Folin–Ciocalteu reagent. Among the C. mas cultivars and C. officinalis genotypes, there was considerable variation in the content of iridoids, flavonoids, and AC. Interspecific hybrids C. mas × C. officinalis contained more iridoids than C. mas and more anthocyanins than C. officinalis and additionally had higher AC and TPC than C. officinalis and most C. mas. AC, TPC, and the presence of iridoids, anthocyanins, and flavonols in hybrids C. mas × C. officinalis are reported for the first time. The Cornus species deserve special attention due to their highly biologically active substances, as well as useful medicinal properties.

The mineral components of the foodstuff consumed by an individual are important in the growth and development of a human being. In recent years red fruits, because of their potential beneficial health effects, are getting attention of both consumers and manufacturers. One of the red fruits, Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.), was investigated in terms of both mineral components and antioxidant properties. The mineral components include calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), and zinc (Zn) in this fruit were determined using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The antioxidant activity tests were applied to the extracts obtained using different solvents to examine the antioxidant properties of this fruit. Statistical analysis indicated that while the best results were obtained from acetone extracts, the lowest results were obtained from water extracts for all antioxidant activity tests (p<0.05). The best average values for DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging capacity, reducing power, total phenolic content and total flavonoid content in acetone extracts were found to be 1053.72±38.12 mg TEAC/100 g FW and 2907.34±152.05 mg TEAC/100 g FW, 5894.99±251.05 mg TEAC/100 g FW, 2979.25±69.40 mg GAE/100 g FW and 255.75±14.92 mg QE/100 g FW, respectively.

Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.), a fruit found in Central Europe, is used as a traditional ingredient in fruit preserves. In this study, we analyzed seven cultivars of Cornelian cherry growing in Poland and the differences between them in sugar content, total polyphenol content, and total chlorophyll content. Moreover, we measured the antioxidant potential of Cornelian cherry extracts was also measured. Polyphenols were found to be highest in Słowianin, Wydubieckij and Jolico cultivars. The presented research outcomes were extremely different from the results obtained for the other cultivars of Cornelian cherry. The electrochemical analysis of extracts proved that compounds contained in Cornelian cherry had the reducing against peroxyl radicals, which makes these extracts an important class of nutritional antioxidants. Our study showed that electrochemical assessment can replace the standard colorimetric tests in the evaluation of the antioxidant potential of analyzed compounds. Aplicación para el cribado electroquímico novedoso del potencial antioxidante y fitoquímicos en extractos de Cornus mas RESUMEN La cereza de cornalina (Cornus mas L.), una fruta que se encuentra en Europa Central, se usa como ingrediente tradicional para la elaboración de conservas de frutas. El presente estudio analizó siete cultivares de cerezas Cornus mas que crecen en Polonia, así como las diferencias en el contenido de azúcar, el contenido total de polifenoles y el contenido total de clorofila existentes entre ellas. Además, se midió el potencial antioxidante de los extractos de esta cereza. Se constató que los polifenoles son más abundantes en los cultivares de Słowianin, Wydubieckij y Jolico. Los resultados de esta investigación mostraron la existencia de diferencias muy importantes al compararlos con los resultados obtenidos para los otros cultivares de la cereza de Cornus mas. El análisis electroquímico de los extractos mostró que los compuestos contenidos en dicha cereza disminuyen los radicales peroxilo, lo que hace de estos extractos una clase importante de antioxidantes nutricionales. El estudio reveló que la evaluación electroquímica puede remplazar las pruebas colorimétricas estándar en la evaluación del potencial antioxidante de los compuestos analizados.
