Semi-natural grasslands invaded by the legume Lupinus polyphyllus need the introduction of target species in order to promote highly endangered native target plant communities. However, which techniques are best suited to achieve both invader control and the introduction of target species at the same time? Few studies have investigated restoration techniques that support native plant communities in mountain meadows and control the invader simultaneously. We employed the restoration techniques seed bank activation and green hay transfer in combination with manual removal of the invasive L. polyphyllus on three types of grassland (Nardus grassland, mesic and wet mountain hay meadows) in the low mountain ranges of the Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in central Germany. Vegetation reacted differently to specific measures depending on the type of grassland. L. polyphyllus cover could be effectively reduced by L. polyphyllus removal in Nardus grassland and mesic hay meadow sites, but not in wet meadows. In Nardus grassland, the cover of target species was lowered by the application of green hay. The target species cover of wet mountain hay meadows declined in response to seed bank activation. When restoring mountain meadows, restoration practitioners should thus first consider the specific vegetation types. As our study indicates that target mountain meadow species may react negatively to restoration measures in the short term, the long-term effects of the application of green hay should be studied.

Antecedentes: A pesar de que las especies pueden presentar amplios rangos altitudinales, poco se conoce acerca de cómo varía su abundancia y de las variables asociadas a esta variación. Hipótesis: Existirá una asociación entre la abundancia y características reproductivas, como peso de la semilla, la germinación y el tamaño y forma de las plántulas a lo largo de un gradiente altitudinal. Especies de estudio: Gymnocalycium quehlianum Sitio de estudio y fecha: Sierras Chicas, Provincia de Córdoba, Argentina. 2015-2016. Métodos: se midió la densidad y la estructura poblacional en tres sitios de la distribución de G. quehlianum en un gradiente altitudinal, a 615, 948 y 1,257 m snm. Se pesaron las semillas, se determinó el porcentaje y el tiempo medio de germinación (TMG), y se midió la longitud y diámetro de las plántulas. Resultados: El peso de las semillas fue menor en la población de altitud intermedia, mientras que el porcentaje y el TMG no variaron significativamente entre las altitudes. El tamaño de la plántula fue menor en la altitud intermedia, mientras que la forma de las plántulas de las poblaciones extremas presentó una forma más alargada. Conclusiones: No existe una relación entre la abundancia poblacional a lo largo del gradiente altitudinal y las variables analizadas. Algunas variables no presentaron diferencias a lo largo del gradiente, como el porcentaje de germinación y el tiempo medio de germinación; otras variables como el peso de la semilla y la forma y tamaño de las plántulas lo hicieron de manera contraria a lo esperado.

Coreopsis tinctoria (coreopsis, calliopsis, plains coreopsis, or golden wave) is an annual herbaceous Asteraceae with a broad geographic distribution mostly in the central and western United States. It co-occurs with Bouteloua curtipendula (sideoats grama) or other native C 4 grasses. When grown together, C. tinctoria response variables decreased significantly in the presence of B. curtipendula aboveground, belowground, and total dry mass. The response variables included mean plant height, number of flower buds per plant, flowers per plant, as well as aboveground, belowground, and total dry mass. The presence of B. curtipendula belowground dry mass caused the greatest suppression of C. tinctoria belowground dry mass. When B. curtipendula tops were clipped to reduce grass aboveground dry mass (simulated herbivory), the percent survival of C. tinctoria plants increased from one percent in the no-clipping treatment to 18% in the neighbor removal treatment (100% clipped). Coreopsis tinctoria does not appear to be a good competitor in the presence of B. curtipendula and seems to be restricted to gaps or patches in disturbed grasslands where competition from perennial grass neighbors is reduced.
