Bauxite. Dehydrogenation Catalyst For Styrene Production

Abstract: SHORTLYafter the outbreak of World War II, the country's dire need for synthetic rubber necessitated large-scale production of styrene for GR-S type rubber. In the early part of this program Florite (1, 2), desiccant grade Alabama bauxite, was employed as the catalyst for the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene. This naturally occurring bauxite was later replaced by a catalyst manufactured under the auspices of the Rubber Reserve Corporation. This company's research division has investigated various typ… Show more

“…The activity of adsorbent alumina for the polymerization of C4 hydrocarbons has been investigated (15,36) and bauxite has been used for the polymerization of diolefins (5,35), but little is known about the ability of granular activated bauxite to polymerize C4 olefins (7). Knowledge of the catalytic properties of bauxite for the promotion of such reactions as the cracking (23), isomerization (4, 37), and dehydrogenation (S3, 41) of hydrocarbons suggested the study of its action in the polymerization of C4 hydrocarbons. This paper presents the results of a preliminary investigation of C4 olefins in the presence of activated bauxite and the surprising differences in the action of the catalyst on the various unsaturated C4 hydrocarbons.…”
