Bayesian approach with the maximum entropy principle in image reconstruction from microwave scattered field data

Abstract: Microwave imaging is of great interest in medical applications owing to its high sensitivity with respect to dielectric properties. It allows detection of very small inhomogeneities. The image reconstruction employing the microwave inverse scattering consists of reconstructing the image of an object from the scattered field measured behind the object. This reconstruction runs up against the nonuniqueness of the solution of the inverse scattering problem. The authors propose to solve the ill-posed inverse probl… Show more

“…The possibility of achieving super-resolution in the image acquisition system (one-dimensional images, a system with diffraction limit) is demonstrated. Researches have shown the effectiveness of the practical application of the ME method in the reconstruction of images in tomography [ 17 , 18 , 19 ], radio astronomy [ 20 , 21 , 22 ], nuclear magnetic resonance [ 23 ], as well as in ultrasonic testing [ 24 , 25 ]. The paper [ 26 ] is devoted to the deconvolution of high-frequency (10–40 MHz) echoes by the maximum entropy method in the measurement of the thickness of layered structures.…”

“…However, because of the ill-posed nature of such the image reconstruction problem [2] the SFO, in general, is ill-conditioned or even singular. The ME principle [2], [5] provides the well-grounded way to alleviate the problem ill-poseness. Based on the ME paradigm, the whole image is viewed as a composition of a great amount of elementary discrete (speckles or pixels) with the elementary "pixel brightness".…”

“…For estimating the moisture levels (in terms of dielectric constant) in a porous material with a large cross-sectional dimension, we apply a statistical inversion approach [12] based on the Bayesian framework. Some earlier efforts of using statistical inversion approaches in MWT have been proposed in [13]- [16].…”
