Bayesian Nonparametric Models of Circular Variables Based on Dirichlet Process Mixtures of Normal Distributions

Abstract: This article introduces two new Bayesian nonparametric models for circular data based on Dirichlet process (DP) mixtures of normal distributions. The first model is a projected DP mixture of bivariate normals and the second approach is based on a wrapped DP mixture of normal distributions. We show how to carry out inference for these models based on a slice sampling scheme and introduce an approach to estimating a variant of the deviance information criterion which is appropriate in the context of latent varia… Show more

“…Finally, we compare our results with alternative models, specifically we consider a parametric projected normal (Nuñez-Antonio and Gutiérrez-Peña, 2005) and a nonparametric DPM of projected normals (Nuñez et al, 2015). The corresponding LPML statistics are reported in the last two rows in Table 3.…”

“…Fisher, 1989). Within a Bayesian nonparametric approach, Dirichlet processes mixtures (DPM) of von Mises distributions (Gosh et al, 2003) and DPM of projected normal distributions (Nuñez et al, 2015) have been proposed. Other semiparametric approaches are mixtures of triangular distributions (McVinish and Mengersen, 2008) and log-spline distributions (Ferreira et al, 2008).…”

“…4,5 Bu dağılımlar için karma dağılım sayısı bilinmediği durumlarda Dirichlet süreci kullanılarak Bayesci yarı parametrik yöntemlerde önerilmiştir. 15,16 BULGULAR Bu bölümde, tek tepeli, iki-tepeli karma dairesel dağılımlar ve genelleştirilmiş von Mises dağılımla-rını kullanarak, ilk önce DASSD 1 protein veri tabanındaki Alanin amino asitler dizisi (Ala-AlaAla) için dihedral açısı , daha sonra ise su kaplumbağalarının kumsaldan dönüş yönleri verileri analiz edildi. Bu veri setlerinin analizinde açı birimi derece yerine radyan kullanılmıştır, yani derece birimiyle ifade edilen açı değerleri /180 ile çarpılmıştır.…”

“…In the XXI century, thanks to the advances of the statistical science, new more elaborated models have been proposed, specially in the context of bayesian nonparametrics. For instance, Núñez-Antonio et al (2015) proposed a Dirichlet process mixture of wrapped and projected normals, and Nieto-Barajas and Núñez-Antonio (2021) introduced a projected Pólya tree for the analysis of circular data.…”
