Be well: A systems-based wellness intervention using mindfulness in the workplace – A case study

Abstract: Introduction: Healthy work environments are essential in determining improved well-being of Australians. Job stress has been identified as a significant factor in psychological distress. This study evaluated the effect of introducing a systems-based workplace wellness programme using mindfulness in the workplace. “…While the research on mindfulness in the workplace is surging (Kristensen, 2018;Purser, 2018;Good et al, 2016;Hülsheger et al, 2018;Levett et al, 2017;Lomas et al, 2017;Vu and Gill, 2018;Yu and Zellmer-Bruhn, 2018;Walsh, 2018), this study specifically examines if mindfulness training contributes to creativity with individuals in a workgroup. It not only explores a real-world work environment, but also addresses a growing concern that much of the mindfulness hype needs to apply more rigorous science and considers many of the recommended design features identified in the most recent prescriptive checklist (Van Dam et al, 2018).…”

“…This aligns with research designs which focus on evaluating multi‐faceted interventions (e.g. Levett et al, 2019; Mills et al, 2016) which aim to evaluate the effectiveness of the whole intervention rather than understanding the mechanisms through which any specific intervention activity operates. Thus, the so‐called person‐activity fit is defined by how much a person likes and benefits from a certain activity.…”

“…Moreover, there are variations in the purpose of research on PAIs, with some research aiming to understand how they work, while others aim to evaluate the overall effectiveness of a multi‐faceted intervention for a cohort of workers (e.g. Levett, Coughlan, Longridge, Roumeliotis, & Adams, 2019; Mills, Fullagar, & Culbertson, 2016). Our study adopts the latter approach and looks at the impact of combining PAIs with mindfulness on both health impairment (i.e.…”

“…Often with mindfulness-based interventions, researchers have sought to, with considerable success; increase a variety of well-being indicators, including flourishing, life satisfaction, interpersonal relationships and mental and physical health (Brown et al, 2007;Fjorback et al, 2011). Although most of this research focuses on people's personal lives, recent research also suggests similar interventions may increase positive work outcomes as well (Levett et al, 2017). While the relationship between mindfulness and meaning in life has received some empirical investigation, few studies have examined mindfulness interventions as a way of increasing meaning in life (Dobkin et al, 2016).…”
