Beam deflector using double-refraction in ferroelectric liquid crystal waveguides

Abstract: Confined SmC* liquid crystals layers have particularly advantageous properties which can be used to produce fast light modulators, with various applications in optical signal processing and optical communication systems. Although usually used in a spatial configuration (e.g. spatial light modulators), other configurations use FLC in waveguide applications. The advantageous properties of FLC, allow it however to be used as the guiding core of waveguides. In this context, we present the design, fabrication and e… Show more

“…These materials exhibit unique properties that enable them to be used for a variety of applications, including displays [1][2][3], telecommunication switching [4,5], and optical storage [6,7]. In particular, due to the increasing market for high definition displays, liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have become a prominent area of research in the LC field, as they hold the potential for enabling displays with higher resolution, lighter weight, and reduced thickness.…”

“…However, despite the signi cant bene ts of FLCs, a number of di Y culties have kept these materials Ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) exhibit unique from reaching large scale commercial applications, properties enabling their use in a variety of applications, including defects, alignment, and stability issues [10][11][12]. including displays [1][2][3], telecommunication switching One of the more signi cant drawbacks of FLCs is [4,5], and optical storage [6,7]. In particular, due to their susceptibility to mechanical shock [11].…”

“…When longitudinal anisotropy is incorporated there is an asymmetry with respect to the z-direction. This leads to off-axis energy transfer of the extraordinary polarization component [14][15][16]. We have developed a mode solver capable of handling fully anisotropic problems.…”
