Beam injection with a pulsed sextupole magnet in an electron storage ring

Abstract: We have developed a new beam injection system with a single pulsed sextupole magnet (PSM) at the photon factory storage ring (PF ring) in the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization. We demonstrated beam injection with this system and succeeded in storing a beam current of 450 mA, which is the normal operating beam current of the PF ring. Top-up injection was also achieved. Coherent dipole oscillation of the stored beam and fluctuation of photon intensity observed at synchrotron radiation beam lines duri… Show more

“…The stability of the photon beam intensity was achieved by the top-up operation of the Photon Factory facility that has been available in the recent operation [44]. Since the instability of the energy of the photon beam at a narrow photon bandwidth causes fluctuation in the electron-beam intensity, we have used a lower resolution of about 4 meV for the photon beam during the measurement.…”

“…Furthermore, as stability criteria become tougher in newer storage ring designs, this method of injection becomes less favorable. Therefore, several labs have started investigating alternative injection schemes [11][12][13][14][15].…”

“…But PMI is not restricted to quadrupoles. In fact, there are advantages to using higher-order multipole magnets, for example a pulsed sextupole magnet (PSM) [15]. Around the magnet center, the PSM field is symmetric and flat: for a specific amplitude of the injected bunch at the PSM, x pm , the residual kick to a particle within the stored beam (at a small amplitude x) is reduced by a factor x=x pm compared to the residual kick from a PQM.…”

“…An injection scheme utilizing multipole kicker and avoiding the inclusion of a kicker bump has been proposed and experimentally examined [4]. The injected bunch passes through a pulsed multipole magnet with an offset from its center while the circulating bunches pass through the center.…”
