Bearing Capacity Map for An-Najaf and Kufa Cities Using GIS

Abstract: An-Najaf province is situated in southwestern part of Iraq. It is 70 meters above the sea level in the dry desert environment. The city is considered as one of the most important cities in Iraq, facing a fast population growth and continuous development in constructions such as residential complexes, hotels, bridges and shopping malls. Soil investigation data for An-Najaf Province (An-Najaf and Kufa cities) from 464 boreholes drilled by the National Centre for Construction Laboratories & Researches (NCCLR)/Bab… Show more

“…An-Najaf city has an area of (28,824) km 2 and forms about (6,6%) of the Iraq area (Al-Mamoori et al, 2018b;COOPERATION, 2009). About (5%) of the city is located within the alluvial plain, and the rest located within the western plateau (Al-Maliki et al, 2018). It consists of three districts and seven sub-districts (The district of the An-Najaf centre, with two sub-districts linked to it, al-Haidariya and al-Shabaka, Al-Kufa district with two sub-districts linked to it: Al-Abbasiya and Al-Hurriya and Al-Manathira district, with three sub-districts: Al-Hirah, Al-Meshkhab and Al-Qadisiyah are linked to it)as) as shown in Figure 1.…”

“…Data of 464 boreholes are collected and tabulated using an excel sheet and the GIS software is used to investigate the allowable bearing capacity of Al-Najaf and Al-Kufa city, southwest of Baghdad, Iraq (Al-Maliki et al, 2018). Geo-hazard warning system including the rainfall prediction is modeled and tested using the functions of the GIS system (Al-Maliki et al, 2018). The hazard warning system is implemented using GIS technology to determine the warning dissemination due to disaster and risk assessment is also evaluated (Ghosh et al, 2015).…”

“…It is known that the factors of safety in geotechnical engineering design have a major effect more than those in any other structural engineering design [1]. This is because the soil has an unpredictable character in addition to the errors that occurred in soil tests, whether in situ or in laboratories [2][3][4]. Traditional, designing of retaining structures has been carried out according to either the Rankine or Coulomb earth pressure theory [5].…”
