Bearings-only aerial shooter localization using a microphone array mounted on a drone

Abstract: Estimating the direction of arrival (DoA) of an audio signal from an aerial platform gives way to estimating the source localization. This paper addresses the problem of airborne shooter localization using a microphone array mounted on a drone. In this scenario, the noise of the propellers poses a great level of difficulty in estimating the DoA of the gunshot signals owing to low levels of SNR. This, combined with the fact that a moving drone records multiple gunshots at different positions, have discouraged t… Show more

“…By evaluating the von Mises filter for a range of uninformative range hypotheses, the method leverages network fusion to exploit spatial diversity among nodes, probabilistically triangulating the relevant source positions and range hypotheses. Realistic simulation results demonstrate significant improvements over classical approaches, enhancing accuracy by up to 39% compared to constant concentration parameter methods and up to 74% compared to least-squares source triangulation techniques [21].…”

“…The proposed scheme is evaluated using experimental data from both simulated and recorded gunshot signals. Another application used to estimate the DoA of gunshots-using the same algorithms but with the microphone array embedded in a drone-can be seen in [4,9,21,22].…”

“…In contrast, for works falling into the LA and AA categories, UAVs have to be adapted to carry out the microphone arrays; hence, custom UAVs may be more convenient. “…It is important to note that in a considerable number of non-MUSIC approaches reported in Table 3 , the UAV’s ego-noise is removed by exploiting the harmonic structure of its rotors’ acoustic spectral signature. This seems to be effective, since techniques that are sensitive to noise (such as GCC-PHAT used in [ 60 ] and cosine distance between signals in [ 70 ]) provide a moderate to good performance after noise removal.…”

“…Fortunately, microphone arrays bring new potential solutions to deal with these problems. Microphone arrays are widely used in civilian and military fields, such as noise reduction and signal enhancement [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ], hearing aid [ 5 , 6 ], outdoor wind noise measurement [ 7 , 8 ], acoustic source localization and tracking [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ], weapon classification and shooter localization [ 13 , 14 ], and so on. In the last few years, due to the development of the micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) technology, small aperture arrays have shown their potential superiority in terms of portability and easy deployment, especially in the field.…”
