Beasley’s 1981 paper: The power of a well-designed cohort study to drive liver cancer research and prevention

Abstract: The 1981 Lancet paper by Beasley et al., "Hepatocellular carcinoma and hepatitis B virus. A prospective study of 22707 men in Taiwan" is a seminal publication that clearly demonstrated that chronic infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV), as measured by seropositivity for the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), preceded the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In doing so, this study paved the way for liver cancer prevention efforts through the implementation of hepatitis B vaccination programs. In t… Show more

“…Almost all HBV-associated HCCs harbor chromosomally integrated DNA [319,320]. Due to the circular structure of the HBV genome, no formation of infectious viral particles can occur based on the integrated DNA, but the expression of regulatory proteins occurs.…”

“…Aflatoxin, however, did not remain the only answer to the question of liver cancer causation. In the early 1970s, scientists hypothesized that the recently discovered hepatitis B virus could cause liver cancer (Koshiol et al 2018). A series of Sino-US collaborative epidemiological studies sought to confirm this hypothesis (Jiang 2018).…”

“…[ 2 , 15 ] However, these studies have investigated the general population rather than focusing on patients with schizophrenia. Long-term hepatic outcomes, such as liver cancer, [ 16 , 17 ] liver failure, [ 18 , 19 ] and liver decompensation, [ 20 ] in patients with schizophrenia and viral hepatitis remain unclear.…”
