The first fully female prison was the Indiana Women's Prison, which opened in 1873. This prison was believed to be safer for the women as it separated them from the more severe and aggressive male inmates. Even though the prison system was segregated there was still violence within the inmate population among men, women, and juveniles. The prison system has evolved throughout the years and recently we have seen the return of co‐correctional prisons. This is primarily due to economic reasons and an inability to fill all beds. Another topic of discussion regarding these prisons is the treatment of LGBT – particularly transgender – individuals.
