“…The scale has 21 items, although in the present research, item 21, 'loss of interest in sex', was removed, due to the distress or embarrassment which this item frequently elicited from this sample of 'old old' residents. This problem has been noted in previous research with older persons (Jefferson et al, 2001).…”

“…This instrument is one of the most commonly used scales to assess the presence and severity of depression in normal and clinical adult samples. This version of the BDI was revised to be consistent with DSM-IV criteria for diagnosing depressive disorder, and has been validated for use with depressed older adults in inpatient and community settings (Steer et al, 2000;Jefferson et al, 2001). A sample item is 'Sadness', with participants choosing between responses 'I do not feel sad', 'I feel sad much of the time', 'I am sad all the time', and 'I am so sad or unhappy that I can't stand it'.…”

“…Each of these techniques assesses the intensity of the depressive mood of the last 2 weeks. Jefferson, Powers, and Pope (2008) indicate that the BDI-II positively correlated with the GDS (r = .71) and both instruments demonstrated good internal consistency. However, GDS-15 is more often used in the study of older people.…”

“…There is research to support the use of the original version of the BDI (Beck, Ward, Mendelson, Mock, & Erbaugh, 1961) with older adults (Gallagher, Breckenridge, Steinmetz, & Thompson, 1983 ;Hyer & Blount, 1984 ;Norris, Gallagher, Wilson, & Winograd, 1987) . And, recent validation of the BDI-II indicates similar validity correlations between the BDI-II and GDS in use with older women (Jefferson, Powers, & Pope, 2000) . Because of the tendency for somatic items to be endorsed more frequently in the geriatric population, there has been concern about the BDI's tendency to overestimate depression in the elderly.…”
