Beck Hopelessness Scale: Psychometric Properties Among Rural Chinese Suicide Attempters and Non-Attempters

Abstract: The authors recruited 401 suicide attempters from general hospitals and 409 matched non-attempters to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) in rural China. All participants completed the BHS, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), and Trait Anxiety Inventory (TAI). Suicide attempters had higher BHS scores than non-attempters. Cronbach's alpha coefficients were satisfactory and BHS scores significantly correlated to CES-D and TAI scores. Confirmatory facto… Show more

“…A higher score indicates higher level of hopelessness and a higher suicide risk. It’s a good instrument with good validity and reliability for suicide attempters in rural China (Zhang et al, 2015), with a Cronbach reliability alpha of 0.93 in this study.…”

“…Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS): Twenty self‐report items measure hopelessness using binary (“yes”/“no”) responses, giving total scores ranging from 0 to 20. Total scores of 0 to 3 reflect “minimal,” 4 to 8 “mild,” 9 to 14 “moderate,” and above 14 “severe” hopelessness.…”

“…It contains 24 items using a five-point scoring method, ranging from "strong disagreement" to "strong agreement". 14 Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) 16 : Twenty self-report items measure hopelessness using binary ("yes"/"no") responses, giving total scores ranging from 0 to 20. Total scores of 0 to 3 reflect "minimal," The Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ) 19 is used to assess the coping modes of patients after diagnosis, including confrontation (eight items), avoidance (seven items), and resignation (five items), in accordance with the basic reactions of people who face danger.…”

“…Used as a criterion-related validation instrument in the current study, the estimate of internal consistency of the BHS score for the study sample was adequate (Cronbach's alpha = .898). Based on the original scale, an earlier study modified the response format of the BHS [38] from yes/no to a 5-point Likert-type scale ranging from 1 (strongly agree) to 5 (strongly disagree). This form of response scaling is more suitable for Chinese respondents.…”
