Beck’s creative challenge to class analysis: from the rejection of class to the discovery of risk-class

Abstract: Beck's rejection of the relevance of class in Risk Society has had an immense impact on both the fields of class analysis and the sociology of risk. In outlining a novel theory of the systemic importance of risks as side-effects and in making bold claims about how the production and distribution of risks are undermining class inequalities, Beck posed a highly influential challenge to both risk and class studies. Beck's impact on class analysis however has not been mainly due to widespread acceptance of his ori… Show more

“…53 As such, class privilege not only protects elites from risk, but also shapes and increases risk production itself, thus further exacerbating class inequalities. 54 Identifying risk-classes entails using sociological concepts and analytical categories to define social groups according to their positionalities and relative risks. Risk-class analysis could then provide a basis for directing redistribution in the form of reparations and mitigation payments in anticipation of future harms, such as those related to climate change.…”

“…Important also to our understanding of the (uneven) distribution of risk is its coalescence among those with fewer economic, social, political and personal resources. For example, Curran (2013aCurran ( , 2013bCurran ( , 2018 has drawn together a number of critiques of Beck's work arguing that the original risk society thesis ignores the continuing impact of class within contemporary society. Broadly, Curran (2013aCurran ( , 2013b notes that risk remains unevenly distributed, and those most likely to be adversely affected remain the poor and otherwise disadvantaged.…”

“…The classes in the East European post‐socialist context have been recently described as yet ‘in the making’ and as different from Western classes in terms of their composition, their distribution (i.e., the sparse middle class), and the mismatch of cultural and economic capital (see Roberts and Pollock ). During the turn of the century, debates arose which questioned the usefulness of the concept of class altogether (Beck ; Pakulski and Waters ; for critique, see Paternoster ; Curran ). While for some, the concept has lost its heuristic force for comprehending social processes, others are calling for redefining its essence.…”
