Beeinflussung der PSA-Konzentration im Serum durch körperliche Belastung (insbesondere Fahrradfahren)

Abstract: Men should abstain from physical exercise, especially from cycling for several days and at least for 24 h before PSA measurements are carried out. This applies to patients with elevated PSA levels (>4 ng/ml) when a PSA follow-up is being carried out.

“…Long-distance biking is an excellent model to study the combined effects of mechanical prostate stimulation by bicycle riding and strenuous endurance exercise [ 2 ]. Mejak and coworkers demonstrated that cycling causes a significant increase in total PSA level when measured within 5 min post-cycling [ 3 ], whereas similar results were also achieved in other studies [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]. On the other hand, other researchers report no changes in PSA level following cycling [ 8 , 9 , 10 ], showing the controversy of these types of studies.…”

“…Although the level of physical activity differed modestly, both studies describe an elevation in post-ride specimens [ 3 , 6 ] and, thus, are consistent with our findings. It is noteworthy that Kindermann et al showed that one hour cycle ergometer activity increased not only tPSA, but also fPSA [ 5 ].…”

“…Serial blood tests showed a rapid decrease over the subsequent hours, with most men returning to baseline by 48 hours. 5 Another study of 129 men aged 50–71 ( M =55) showed an average PSA increase of 9.5% five minutes after cycling. 6 The study that showed the greatest rise was that of 301 otherwise healthy men tested 15 minutes after cycling.…”

“…Many factors affect PSA values, which decreases the accuracy of PSA screening for PCa diagnosis. For example, diet [ 8 ], inflammation in prostate [ 9 ], benign prostatic hyperplasia [ 10 ], urinary tract infection [ 11 ], ejaculation [ 12 ], exercise bikes [ 13 ] and urological intervention all change the PSA values. When using PSA values as an indicator for PCa screening, we must consider those interfering factors with potential PCa diagnosis.…”
