Behavior of Ironmaking Slag Permeation to Carbonaceous Material Layer

Abstract: An understanding of slag/carbon interaction is of great importance due to their extensive application in a number of metallurgical process, such as blast furnace ironmaking and direct reduction ironmaking processes. Along with the improvement of blast furnace operation, many attentions have been also paid for direct reduction ironmaking processes to meet the recent severe supply conditions of resources, energy and environmental restriction. Most of direct reduction ironmaking processes had generally used natur… Show more

“…5,6) On the other hand, under a poor wettability condition, a capillary force holds up the liquid at a narrow neck of the packed bed. 7,8) The hold-up of the liquid is influenced by the contact angle, surface tension, and packed layer structure, as described above. The wettability between carbon and slag in a blast furnace was thoroughly described by Mukai et al 9) and Barrett et al 10) Measurements of the contact angle between the coke and liquid have been conducted in recent years considering the influence of ash.…”

“…Consequently, the coal-based CCA reduction behaviors with the slag composition 'a', 'b' and 'c' have been well studied. [6][7][8][9][10] However, these slag compositions are not suitable © 2014 ISIJ for high Al2O3 iron ore due to the increase of slag volume. Thus, to effectively and extensively use high Al2O3-containing iron ores with CCA reduction process, alternative slag design must be developed.…”

“…2,3) On the other hand, in the case of non-wetting holdup, liquid accumulates on the site of concentrated, packed bed particles. 4,5) In this way, the amount of liquid in the packed bed depends on surface tension, contact angle, and the structure of the packed bed. As represented by Young's formula, the wettability is evaluated using the static contact angle, which is determined by the interface energy between the gas, liquid, and solid.…”
