Behavior of sheep fed babassu cake (Orbygnia speciosa) as a substitution for elephant grass silage

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the behavior of sheep fed babassu cake as a substitution for elephant grass silage. The experiment was conducted at the Federal Rural University of Amazonia (Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia - UFRA), Brazil, using 45 sheep housed in individual stalls, with unlimited access to feed and distributed in a completely randomized design with five treatments (0, 12.5, 25, 37.5 and 50% inclusion of babassu cake) and nine replications. All of the treatments contained a roughage-to-conc… Show more

“…According to Santos Neta et al (2017), the effectiveness of fibre in stimulating rumination is affected by the NDF content and particle size. These characteristics are associated with the ability of the feed to stimulate chewing and the release of substances in the saliva that act to maintain the pH and rumen health (HUMER et al, 2018).…”

“…In the north and northeast of Brazil, babassu (Orbignya ssp.) is one of the principal plants used as a source of raw material in the manufacture of biodiesel, a process that generates many by-products, including babassu cake, that has the potential for use in ruminant feed (CASTRO et al, 2009;OLIVEIRA et al, 2014OLIVEIRA et al, ), 2009OLIVEIRA et al, 2014) and can replace an energy ingredient in the concentrate, such as millet (ALENCAR et al, 2015), and dietary bulk, such as elephant grass silage (LUZ et al, 2019;SANTOS NETA et al, 2017). In this respect, knowledge of the ingestive behaviour of animals that receive by-products as part of their diet can help in developing diets and in understanding the problems associated with reduced intake.…”

“…The few studies available with by-products (Cruz et al 2012;Santana et al 2014;Neta et al 2017) on ingestive behaviour has a variable results due to the different species of ruminant used, variable composition of by-product and different concentrations of addition in the diet.…”

“…Sheep meat production has increased in Brazil, mainly because of its great productive potential and shorter finishing period compared to other ruminant animals (Neta et al 2017), which resulted in increased use of the feedlot system. Thus, the use of a larger quantity of concentrate to meet their nutritional requirements and reach the slaughter weight in a short period of time has been adopted, increasing the cost of production and the risks of metabolic disorders, caused in most of time, by improper feeding management (Ørskov 1986).…”

“…Its fruits are used for the manufacture of oil, soap, and cosmetics as well as other domestic products. Babassu cake, which contains approximately 21 to 25% crude protein (Santos et al, 2017;Sá et al, 2015), is a byproduct of babassu palm oil extraction and can be used in ruminant feed. Brazil is third in the global production of pineapple (Ananas comosus), with 2.478 million tons produced every year (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development [UNCTD], 2016).…”
