Behavioral and Psychosocial Correlates of HIV Testing Among Male Clients of Female Sex Workers in Tijuana, Mexico

Abstract: We use data collected from a sample of 400 male clients of female sex workers (FSW) to examine their HIV testing behavior. We present frequencies of HIV testing and used bivariate and multivariable analyses to assess its socio-demographic, behavioral, and psychosocial correlates. We found that the majority (55%) of male clients of FSW in Tijuana, Mexico had never had an HIV test and the prevalence of HIV testing within the past year was low (9%). In multivariable analyses, significant correlates of having ever… Show more

“…Given the unique cultural context, our research team has created and used a measure of misogyny specifically for men at-risk for HIV in Tijuana, Mexico. Our previous research that focused on HIV-related behaviors showed that increased misogynistic attitudes were associated with less frequent HIV testing (Fleming et al, 2016) and increased number of unprotected sex acts with female sex workers (Semple et al, 2010). However, we have not examined whether misogyny is correlated with men’s mental health outcomes or substance use behaviors.…”

“…Regular HIV testing is the gateway to detecting people living with HIV promptly, but more research is needed to learn about the risk-profile and characteristics of frequent testers. Studies on the facilitators and barriers to HIV testing among different key populations have found links with socio-demographic factors (e.g., age, education level, marital status) as well as behavioral factors (e.g., multiple sexual partners, unprotected sex, drug use) [5][6][7][8]. However, there is a dearth of literature about factors associated with frequent HIV testing among key populations other than MSM.…”
