Behavioral Contrast: Pavlovian Effects and Anticipatory Contrast

Abstract: Two sources of behavioral contrast have been identified previously: Pavlovian stimulus-reinforcer relations and component sequence effects (anticipatory contrast). This study sought to isolate these sources of control procedurally in a four-ply multiple schedule composed of two fixed two-component sequences. Different cues were associated with the first component of each sequence, and contrast effects were studied in these target components. In Experiment 1, differential cuing of Component 2 between sequences … Show more

“…The present results are similar to those reported recently by Hassin-Herman, Hemmes, and Brown (1992). In a four-component multiple schedule like that used here, they also varied the presence or absence of reinforcement 292 0 y , in the target components and whether the different following schedules were signaled by the same or different stimuli.…”

“…First, it is incomplete because it cannot account for all observations of contrast. However, there is broad agreement that contrast is multiply determined (e.g., de Rose, 1986;Dougan, Farmer-Dougan, & McSweeney, 1989;Dougan et al, 1985Dougan et al, , 1986Hassin-Herman, Hemmes, & Brown, 1992;Williams, 1983), a view that is supported by explicit evidence. As we have argued, some evidence shows that contrast occurs in the absence of differential habituation when the conditions of reinforcement in the following component are changed.…”

“…Future research will need to pursue this explanation. Fortunately, several procedures exist to assess the effects of Pavlovian conditioning on instrumental responding (e.g., Hassin-Herman, Hemmes, & Brown, 1992;Williams, 199,1).…”
