Behaviour of Brasses Corrosion in Nitric Acid with and without PMT

Abstract: The comparative study of corrosion behaviour of brasses 70Cu30Zn and 60Cu40Zn in HNO 3 solution in absence and in presence of 1-phenyl-5-mercapto-1,2,3,4-tetrazole (PMT) was studied by gravimetric and electrochemical methods. Results obtained are in good agreement and reveal that the corrosion rate depends on immersion time and zinc content in the alloy. Copper and zinc losses from each specimen studied, at various immersion times, were estimated by Atomic Adsorption Spectroscopic analysis. This shows that the… Show more

“…Various researchers have stated that the products of the reaction occurred between nitric acid and zinc metal may be different depending on the concentration of nitric acid. “…Due to the fact that the dissolution of metals in acid solutions fit generally to the first‐order kinetic model, 24‐26 the experimental data were analyzed using the model given in Equation ) 27 to found the kinetic parameters and the rate‐controlling step for the dissolution of metallic zinc in nitric acid solutions. ln()1XZn=k.t In Equation ), k and t represent the apparent rate constant and reaction time, respectively. To determine whether or not the dissolution process followed this kinetic model, the plots of the left side of Equation ) versus reaction time were drawn for the experimental parameters.…”

“…So when brass is exposed to nitric acid solution it affected not only by general corrosion, but also by dezincification process. M. Mihit et al 33 suggest that the zinc corrodes more selectively than copper. The corrosion rate of copper is also important, but only after some times of immersion of 60/40 brass in nitirc acid solution.…”
