Behavioural and neurobiological effects of colostrum ingestion in the newborn lamb associated with filial bonding

Abstract: In sheep, the onset of filial bonding relies on early intake of colostrum. The aim of our work was to describe in the newborn lamb housed with its mother the immediate post-ingestive effects of colostrum intake, in terms of behaviour and brain activity. In Experiment 1, lambs received five nasogastric infusions of colostrum, or saline, or sham intubations during the first 6 h after birth. Mother-young interactions were recorded before and after the first, third and fifth infusions. The activity of the dam and … Show more

“…While we cannot draw definite conclusions from only two subjects, one can assume that the first suckling bouts at birth lead to the same outcome. This is supported by a previous study showing that orogastric infusions of colostrum or saline in newly born lambs activate hypothalamic nuclei producing OT as well as vasopressin ( 73 ). Our present results did not show any change in plasma OT concentrations when close contacts excluded suckling.…”

“…Brain substrates activated by post‐ingestive stimuli and hypothetically involved in the development of filial bonding are found mainly in hypothalamic and limbic regions (77). Fos imaging measurement reveals that neural activation after colostrum ingestion is found in the PVN and the SON, in the medial and cortical nuclei of the amygdala, and in the insular cortex.…”
