Behavioural biologists do not agree on what constitutes behaviour

Abstract: Behavioural biology is a major discipline within biology, centred on the key concept of `behaviour.' But how is `behaviour' defined, and how should it be defined? We outline what characteristics we believe a scientific definition should have, and why we think it important that a definition have these traits. We then examine the range of available published definitions for the word. Finding no consensus, we present survey responses from 174 members of three behaviour-focused scientific societies as to their und… Show more

“…1 Stress, pain, or disease may alter animal behavior relative to optimal wellness status, but monitoring these changes is challenging without a clear definition of the expected behavioral response to an adverse event. 2 Some behavioral definitions are vague, and they are not specifically tied to one pain or disease response. Improvement in behavioral monitoring techniques is needed for remote monitoring of activity to be useful as a diagnostic or research tools.…”

“…When asked the same question again some weeks later, as many as 30% may change their answer. This uncertainty in categorization may even affect experts, as in the case in which animal behaviorists were found to have no clear concept of behavior (Levitis, Lidicker, & Freund, 2009).…”
