Behavioural Nurse Therapists 1978 — Developments and Implications

Abstract: In selected adult neurotics, nurse-therapists have a significant contribution to make in giving behavioural psychotherapy to patients who were formerly denied it for lack of trained personnel (Marks et al. 1977). Perhaps 10% of all adult psychiatric outpatients can benefit from behavioural psychotherapy as themainapproach for those categories of problem where established behavioural methods have been found to be superior to contrasting treatments (Marks, 1976).

“…Without a full integration of the material into the therapists' conceptual framework, the intervention is likely to become a slavish application of a rigid program rather than a flexible adaptation to the specific issues and skill requirements of the family. The reported difficulties with tailoring of material in the current study suggest that this may have occurred in some cases, and the observation parallels similar experiences in previous attempts to teach psychological interventions to other professions (e.g., Marks, Burt, & Lindley, 1978). When teaching the material to clinical psychologists, the trainer is able to use an integrated conceptual framework that has been derived during 6 years of prior training.…”

“…When systematic desensitization was first developed, clinicians flocked to apply this effective treatment for phobias. When clinicians realized how boring the treatment process was, they rapidly substituted tape recorders, nurses [74] and computer programs [75]. When clinical procedures lose status, and/or cease to be enjoyable, clinicians become ingenious in finding and "training" surrogates to carry out the procedures.…”
