Behçet's Disease

Abstract: Behçet's disease (BD) is a systemic disorder characterized by recurrent attacks of acute inflammation. Major symptoms are oral aphthous ulcers, uveitis, skin lesions, and genital ulcerations. Involvement of vessels, gastrointestinal (GI) tract, and central nervous system (CNS) is less frequent but is associated with a poor prognosis. Pulmonary complications of BD include aneurysms of the aorta, great vessels, or pulmonary arteries; arterial or venous thrombosis; pulmonary parenchymal changes; pleurisy, and int… Show more

“…Japanese Behçet's disease activity phase classiication was performed in 2003 [10]. In the active phase, presence of subcutaneous venous thrombosis, skin indings (i.e., erythema nodosum and genital ulcer), arthralgia, gastrointestinal ulcer, central nervous system lesions, vasculitis, or epididymitis, and serum CRP, cerebrospinal luid, colonoscopy in the clinical examination including ophthalmologic examination, and other clinical laboratory indings are evaluated.…”

“…The increased expression of both self and infective stress proteins and the extensive sequence homology and cross-reactivity between microbial HSPs (better known as groEL) and human HSPs led to the concept that HSPs might be involved in the etiopathogenesis of BD [63][64][65][66]. In addition to the HSP60, other HSPs (such as αB-crystallin and HSP70) have been suggested to play a role in the pathogenesis of BD [12,[67][68][69][70][71][72].…”
