Behind the Scenes of an Educational Escape Room

Abstract: Educational versions of interactive escape room games can be used to teach and reinforce knowledge and clinical skills. In this article, the authors describe their experience creating, piloting, implementing, and evaluating a safe medication educational escape room for first-year nursing students. They highlight the steps needed to develop an effective learning experience and provide insight into lessons they've learned throughout this process.

“…In today's educational landscape, ER scenarios are promising trends and can be integrated into many academic disciplines, such as healthcare [7][8][9], STEM subjects [10], computer science [11], chemical engineering [12], pharmacy [13], physics [14], mathematics [15], radiology [16], biology [17] and many others. The protagonists of EERs are usually secondary or higher education students, tutors, professionals, designers, and researchers.…”

“…16 In an escape room, perioperative team members will solve problems, earn clues, and progress through the activity as clinical decisions are made and hands-on skills are demonstrated. 16 Potential locations to hold an escape room include a vacant hospital room, simulation laboratory, or conference room. In a room of errors, perioperative team members assess the environment of a familiar room, such as an OR, and identify unsafe elements or areas of concern.…”

“…Kinesthetic learners typically prefer to work through challenges by trial and error, are energetic, and enjoy adventure 15 . Perioperative educators can design an escape room or a room of errors to teach or reinforce knowledge and clinical skills, including critical thinking, communication, and cooperative problem‐solving skills 16 . In an escape room, perioperative team members will solve problems, earn clues, and progress through the activity as clinical decisions are made and hands‐on skills are demonstrated 16 .…”

“…The literature supports gamification of learning as learner-led reinforcement of knowledge that promotes engagement and application of previous experiences (Billings & Halstead, 2016). Furthermore, escape rooms in the educational setting can help learners develop communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills (Hawkins et al, 2020). Although several articles were identified describing the relatively recent use of escape rooms in a variety of healthcare specialties, the team lead was unable to locate any literature related to escape rooms for C-section education.…”

“…Escape rooms support interaction, build on previous experiences, and can allow learners to follow a sequential process to "escape" the room. Hawkins et al (2020) outlined the process of using escape rooms for healthcare education as determining the problem, creating the objectives, gathering information, planning the game, preparing the participants, piloting the simulation, debriefing the learners, and evaluating the impact. Of the objectives created for the program's C-section skills day as a whole, the objective "after a 4-hour C-section skills class, nurses will be able to solve a C-section escape room by using teamwork to progress through a C-section procedure as a circulating nurse" was developed specifically for this activity.…”
