Behind the times: a brief history of motivation discourse in problem-based learning

Abstract: That idea that problem-based learning (PBL) is more motivating that traditional education has been prevalent since the inception of PBL at McMaster University in the late 1960s. Evidencing this through empirical research, however, has proven to be a lot more problematic. This paper retraces how the discourse on motivation started from a laymen’s conception in the early days of PBL, and slowly evolved into a field of scientific inquiry in the 1980s and 1990s. However, looking at the evolution of motivation theo… Show more

“…Modern research proves that motivation is effectively influenced by: -innovative teaching methods (Khadzhiev & Rakhimov, 2019;Tiwery & Souisa, 2019); -problem-based learning (Wijnia & Servant-Miklos, 2019); -indirect learning through activities (Tsai et al, 2019); -learning through research (Chen, 2020), in particular the creation of startups (Jinhyuk & Hyuk, 2020); -extracurricular work (Shaffer, 2019) and non-formal education (Stancescu et al, 2018).…”

“…Among the numerous models of motivational processes, Self-Determination Theory (STD) (Deci & Ryan, 1985) appears to currently be the most researched and applied in the field of psychology (Ryan et al, 2019). Also, this theory is often used to explain students' motivations to learn (Hartmann & Gommer, 2019;Reeve, 2012) and to study motivation in PBL approaches (for example see Wijnia & Servant-Miklos, 2019). Based on SDT, people are motivated by three universal psychological basic needs: autonomy (feeling self-governed and self-endorsed), relatedness (feeling interacted) and competence (feeling competent) (Deci & Ryan, 2000a;Ryan & Deci, 2000b).…”
