Beijing genotype of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is associated with extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis: A global analysis

Abstract: We found that the frequency of Beijing genotype among XDR-TB strains was high. The data in this study would help guide the TB control program, and we however need further investigation to confirm the reliability of the present findings.

“…The lineage that appeared most frequently in our results was Lineage 4, with different resistance phenotypes, this lineage has been associated with a high rate of MDR strains [47]. The Beijing sublineage has been described as having the highest rate of resistance [48] as occurred in our study.…”

“…The Beijing lineage has highest prevalence in Asia and Europe, especially in Eastern European countries including Czech Republic, Moldova, Russia, and Ukraine [ 20 24 ]. The fact that Beijing strains are the main carriers of MDR–TB and extensively drug-resistant TB in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and can lead to the occurrence of several serious outbreaks in close geographical areas [ 25 ], allows to predict MDR–TB spread in Europe due to increased migration of population. Moreover, surge of TB, along with HIV and COVID-19 feared amid war in Ukraine leading to a regional crisis [ 26 ].…”

“…10 Hence, the MTBC responsible for DR-TB varies across regions and countries. [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18] The Beijing genotype is the leading global DR-TB lineage 19 with extensive widening in the Eurasia landmass. 20 Different sub-lineages, including L4.2.2/SIT149, T3-ETH, Haarlem, CAS, EAI5, and L3/SIT25, have been identified in Ethiopia, showing different levels of resistance.…”
