Objective: To investigate the effect of protrusion amount on pain, lumbar mobility, physical dysfunction, and the cross-sectional area of the multifidus muscle in patients with lumbar disc herniation. Methods: 54 male patients aged 20 to 50 years were included in this study in 2 groups. The control group (n = 18) consisted of patients with disc herniation without nerve root compression, and the study group (n = 36) consisted of patients with lumbar disc herniation and nerve root compression in 3 subgroups according to the amount of protrusion. The multifidus muscle cross-sectional area and the amount of protrusion were measured using Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Pain intensity was measured using the Visual Pain Scale, physical dysfunction was measured using the Oswestry Disability Index, flexion-extension was measured with TiltMeter, and trunk rotation was measured with smartphone applications called iPhone Compass. Results: There were no differences in pain levels (P > .05), mean trunk rotation movements of the affected and unaffected sides (P = .001, P = .001, P = .983, and P = .954, respectively), Oswestry Disability Index results (P = .967), or cross-sectional area sizes of the multifidus muscle (P = .866, P = .552, P = .787, respectively). There was a difference between the groups in terms of the mean trunk flexion and extension movement values (P = .001). The regression analysis indicated that there was no significant correlation between the binary variables, and the models exhibited a low explanatory rate for the dependent variable. Conclusion: A relationship has been identified between lumbar disc herniation and low back pain, lumbar movement limitation, and physical functionality. Nevertheless, subsequent to the regression analysis, it became evident that the binary variables did not exhibit a noteworthy relationship, leading to a decrease in the explanatory capacity of the models for the dependent variable. In forthcoming studies, it is advisable to contemplate the augmentation of the subject pool or the incorporation of multiple independent variables into the regression analysis as potential strategies to enhance the model capability in elucidating variations in the dependent variable.

Introduction: This study analyzes factors influencing low back pain in patients admitted to the physiotherapy unit of an education and research hospital. Methods: The study sample included 102 patients who applied to the physiotherapy unit and volunteered to join the study. The data were collected using a 23-items questionnaire created by the authors based on a review of the literature. The data were entered into the SPSS Program For comparisons, p values below 0.05 were deemed to be statistically significant. Results: The mean age of the participants was 46.7±14.4 years. By occupation, low back pain was most common among housewives. Of the patients who suffered from lower back pain, 57.8% were overweight or obese. Of those experiencing lower back pain, 73.5% were standing for long time periods, and 67.6% were lifting heavy loads. Of the patients, 69.6% had lower back pain in their families, and 29.4% of the family members with lower back pain were their mothers. Of the patients, 70.6% received drug therapy for the pain. The frequency of low back pain among patients who did not receive drug therapy was higher than that of the patients who received pain medications (p<0.05). Of the patients who had low back pain attacks 11 times or more in a year, the percentage of smokers was 66.7%, while this rate was 35.7% among nonsmokers (p<0.05). The increase in low back pain with body mass index was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: Patients applied to the hospital due to low back pain report lifting heavy loads or prolonged standing. Smoking increases the frequency of low back pain. Patients with low back pain also tend to have family members with the condition. With appropriate measures to reduce risk factors, the frequency of low back pain, which hinders daily life activities, can be reduced.

ÖzetAmaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı polikliniğimize bel ağrısı ile başvuran hastalarda skolyoz sıklığını saptamak ve Cobb açısı ile yaş ve cinsiyet arasında ilişkisi olup olmadığını araştırmaktı.Yöntem: Bel ağrısı ile polikliniğimize başvuran 10837 hastanın verileri retrospektif olarak değerlendirildi. Öykü ve fizik muayane bulgularına göre skolyozdan şüphelenilip skolyoz grafisi çektirilen 130 hastanın verileri çalışmamıza dahil edildi. Hastaların omurga eğrilik dereceleri radyografik olarak anterio-posterior yönde tüm omurgayı görmeyi sağlayan skolyoz grafisi üzerinde Cobb açısı ölçümü yöntemi ile değerlendirildi. Cobb açısı 10 derece üzerinde olan hastalar skolyoz olarak değerlendirildi. Skolyoz sıklığı, Cobb açısı değerinin yaş ve cinsiyet ile olan ilişkisi araştırıldı.Bulgular: Çalışmaya alınan 130 hastanın 80 tanesi kadın (%61,5), 50 tanesi ise erkek idi (%38,5). Cinsiyete göre yaş ortalamaları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı fark bulunamadı. 111 hastada (%85,4) Cobb açısı <10 derece, skolyoz tanısı alan 19 hastada ise (%14,6) ≥10 derece olarak ölçüldü. Skolyoz sıklığı binde 1,75 idi. Çalışmaya alınan kadın ve erkek hastaların Cobb açısı ortalamaları sırasıyla 5,81 ± 4,22 ve 5,32 ± 4,29 idi. Hastaların Cobb açısı ölçüm sonuçlarının cinsiyete göre dağılımına bakıldığında anlamlı fark olmadığı görüldü. Yaş ile Cobb açısı arasındaki ilişkisi incelendiğinde pozitif yönde zayıf bir korelasyon olduğu görüldü.Sonuç: Bel ağrısıyla başvuran hastalarda skolyoz varlığı göz önünde bulundurulmalı, hastanın yaşı da göz önünde bulundurularak uygun radyolojik istemler yapılmalıdır. SummaryAim: The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of scoliosis in patients who applied to our outpatient clinic with low-back pain and to investigate whether there is a relation between Cobb angle and age and gender. Material and methods:The data of 10.837 patients who applied to our polyclinic with lowback pain were retrospectively evaluated. According to history and physical examination, 130 patients who were requested scoliosis radiography were included in the study. Patients' spine curvature degrees were assessed by Cobb's angle measurement method on a scoliosis radiography which allows the whole spine to be viewed radiographically in anterio-posterior direction. A scoliosis is defined as a lateral spinal curvature with a Cobb angle of 10° or more.The frequency of scoliosis, the relationships between Cobb angle, age and gender were investigated. Results:Of the 130 patients, 80 were female (61.5%) and 50 were male (38.5%). No statistically significant difference was found between the average values of ages according to gender.
