Beliefs, Understanding, and Barriers Related to Dementia Research Participation Among Older African Americans

Abstract: Background: United States Census Bureau projects African Americans (AAs) will be one of the fastest growing populations over the next 30 years. Research suggests they are at higher risk for developing dementia. It is important to know about AA adults’ beliefs about, and knowledge of, dementia; and how these beliefs and knowledge impact participation in dementia research. Methods: Four focus groups were completed with 51 older AA adults (76.5% female; mean age=68) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to examine understa… Show more

“…Responses therefore only reflect perspectives evident during that period. Given that AD research under-represents AA, it is important to increase representation of all sub-groups of AA, but a limitation of note is this sample may not be illustrative of the average AA sample based on national data 7,10…”

“…Providing technology services to communities, for example, workshops on videoconferencing tools, may help build trust. In short, alleviating these barriers and tailoring AD interventions to this population can increase AA representation 7. These strategies can facilitate online research engagement and may open the door for safely increasing in-person research by building trust in the target community.…”

“…This study had some important strengths. This study had a randomized control trial design and it was informed by focus groups of its target population (i.e., older AAs) (Pugh et al, 2021b). However, a limitation was that the study was only 12 weeks in duration.…”

“…Focus groups with older African American adults with content related to dementia and willingness to participate in a physical activity intervention were conducted to inform the study design. More details about the focus groups and outcomes can be found in a prior publication (Pugh et al, 2021b). Briefly, the findings guided the study design toward an intervention located within the community, personalized to health conditions of the participants, and containing fun activities such as line dancing.…”

“…Focus groups with older African American adults were conducted before implementing the intervention. The purposes of the focus groups were to examine understanding of dementia and assess willingness to participate in a PA intervention to inform the study design (28). We recruited participants utilizing community-based efforts (face-to-face presentations and advertisements at churches, sororities/fraternities, community centers, etc.)…”
