Bell 412 System Identification and Model Fidelity Assessment for Hover and Forward Flight

Abstract: Frequency domain system identification of higher order models for the Bell 412 helicopter was performed. First, a frequency response database was derived from flight-test data. For hover, a combination of sweep and 2311-multistep maneuvers had to be used to achieve good results. In addition to the classical six-DoF (degrees of freedom) rigid body states, the identified hover model includes dynamic inflow, rotor coning dynamics, and uses a Padé approximation for the influence of engine dynamics, to improve the … Show more

“…𝑀 is removed from both approaches, due to the weakly-excited yaw motion impacting the pitch acceleration. Moreover, the ASysID results are close to those derived independently using the frequency-domain approach as previously reported in [12]. Secondly, there are larger differences among the off-axis derivatives, e.g., 𝐿 and 𝑀 , that are both predicted with an opposite sign by the LF-B412 w/o MWD, compared with the ASysID estimates.…”

“…Details and results of the identified model in hover can be found in Seher-Weiß et al (Ref. 23). The hover model was identified using the CIFER ® frequency response method detailed in Tischler and Remple (Ref.…”

“…1 Possible "black box" update models simulation models (so-called hybrid modeling) is utilized. In [11], a system identification model of the aircraft was used to calculate the desired input filter for a linear simulator model by algebraic inversion. This paper extends and implements this approach to the nonlinear simulator model.…”
