Belousov−Zhabotinsky Oscillations in Bromate−Oxalic Acid−MnSO4−H2SO4−Acetone System in Nonionic Surfactant Medium. A Calorimetric Study

Abstract: Thermal oscillations in oxalic acid-bromate-MnSO 4 -H 2 SO 4 -acetone system have been studied in aqueous solution of nonionic surfactants, Tweens (20, 40, and 60), and Brijs (56, 58 and 76). It has been observed that significantly low concentration of the surfactants can inhibit the oscillatory reaction. In general, they have inhibitory effects on the frequency and enthalpy of oscillations. The inhibition has been found to have direct dependence on the length of the nonpolar tail of the surfactant molecule. … Show more

“…Berenstein, Agreda and Barragán 10 studied the effect of the addition of methyl-ketones on the induction period. In addition to the Ševčík and Adamčíková's work, 5 the system with acetone and catalyzed by manganese was studied by Weigt, 11 Biswas et al 12 and Guedes and Faria, 13 also under batch conditions. In Guedes and Faria's work, 13 two characteristically different patterns of oscillations, depending on the method of mixing of the reagents and controlled by the acetone concentration, were determined.…”

“…138 A range of dissolved surfactants inhibit the frequency and enthalpy of thermal oscillations of the oxalic acid/bromate/MnSO 4 /H 2 SO 4 /acetone system. 139 The system BrO 3 Ϫ / SO 3 2Ϫ /HCO 3 Ϫ /H ϩ shows oscillations in [H ϩ ], exhibiting both bi-and tristability among steady states (neutral and acidic) as well as the oscillating state. 140 Numerical simulation behaviour for the Bray-Liebhafsky oscillating reaction in a batch reactor in terms of the production of O 2 , matches the experimental data.…”

“…From the oscillatory reaction, only the Belousov–Zhabotinsky (BZ) oscillatory reaction was studied in the micellar solution. Recent studies of catalyzed and uncatalyzed BZ reaction proved the micellar effects on the induction period (IP), the oscillation period (OP), and the amplitudes and also on the initiation or extinction of oscillations.…”
