Benchmarking Shipbuilders’ Turnover of Main Assets

Abstract: This paper presents an analysis of the historical and current asset turnover of several shipbuilding companies and regions, such being responsible for more than 50% of global production. Several turnover measures are used including, as inputs, main physical assets such as dock area, berth length, and lifting capacity; and as outputs, compensated gross tonnage (CGT), and the number of different ships produced. Data Envelopment Analysis is used to gauge the inputs and outputs of the companies in order to define … Show more

“…A Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model is proposed to assess the shipyard performance, and an Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method is used to obtain the Industrial environment indicator. Colin and Pinto [7] use several turnover measures, including main physical assets such as dock area, berth length, lifting capacity and the output CGT. Fareza [8], in his Master Thesis, has developed shipbuilding performance measurement benchmarking using DEA, comparing major shipyards in Asia to acquire the market share by analysing the input and output.…”

“…Pires et al (2009) performed data envelopment analysis to assess shipyard performance. Colin and Pinto (2009) benchmarked yards and shipbuilding regions in terms of their asset utilization, also using data envelopment analysis. None of these studies, however, specifically addressed the building of complex, technologically advanced and innovative, special ships, such as OSVs, under unconventional ship production strategies.…”

“…Pires Jr. et al [5] presented a methodology for shipbuilding performance assessment, based on yard characteristics, production patterns, and industrial surroundings. Colin and Pinto [6] analyzed the asset turnover of several shipbuilding companies, while Semini et al [7] compared different offshoring strategies in ship production. Despite the range of shipbuilding studies, there is a lack of studies aimed at shipyard logistics.…”
