A comparison of bending flexibility between bare biodegradable polydioxanone biliary stents (BBPBSs) and fully covered biodegradable polydioxanone biliary stents (FCBPBSs) developed for humans is presented in this study. Firstly, a series of BBPBSs and FCBPBSs were prepared by braiding method in order to investigate the relationship between the bending load and structure parameters (monofilament diameter and braid-pin number) through a three-point bending method. In addition, a series of three-point bending models based on actual stent specimens above was established and the bending flexibility of BBPBSs and FCBPBSs in three-point bending models was evaluated by the finite element method (FEM). Results showed that the simulation was in good agreement with the experiment, indicating that the simulation results could be used as the reference to access the mechanical behaviors of BBPBSs and FCBPBSs. Furthermore, the distinction in bending flexibility between BBPBSs and FCBPBSs was compared in this simulation and demonstrated that the existence of a nanomembrane component (NMP) in FCBPBS causes remarkable performance variation including bending load (all FCBPBSs increased by at least 0.65%), stress, plastic strain and energy conversion of the stent (the plastic dissipation energy of all FCBPBSs increased by at least 2.33J) in the bending process.

Objective: Biodegradable stents (BDSs) represent a new technological development in the field of cardiovascular angioplasty; good flexibility helps stents pass through tortuous vessels during delivery and reduces the amount of damage caused to blood vessels. This study investigates the relationship between flexibility and the geometry of BDS struts. Methods: Four stent struts with different geometry (circular, triangular, hexagonal, and spline curved) and the same links were modeled to evaluate their flexibility via a three-point bending experimental method and a numerical method. Results: The bending state of the four stents was well-balanced. The bending effect of the four stents was different. Under the same conditions, the circular and spline curved stents showed the best bending effects while the hexagonal stent was the worst. However, these differences were not significant. Conclusion: The flexibility of BDSs is related to the geometry of the struts and links; however, the geometry of the struts has less effect on flexibility than the links. The greater the area enclosed by the strut centerline, the better flexibility of the stent.

Balancing the ideal radial supporting performance with flexibility in polymer stents has always been a significant challenge, and a potential solution to which is provided by the mixed‐braided stents. However, the principles of mechanics and design advantages are yet ambiguous. This study aims to establish a correlation between radial supporting performance and structural morphologies of mixed‐braided stents in the compression process. First, this study establishes a computational framework, which takes into account the different material properties of thick and thin monofilaments as well as actual friction coefficients. Second, this study simulates the crimping process of different mixed‐braided stents to find out the relationship between radial supporting performance and structural morphologies. Finally, by changing the friction coefficient in the simulation model, the influence of friction coefficient on the crimping process of the stents is explored. The result provides a reference for the structural design of mixed‐braided stents: significant differences in diameter and friction coefficient can lead to the instability of the stent. Specifically, as the friction coefficient increases from 0.12 to 0.20, the radial stiffness increases from 0.32 to 0.69 N/mm2, which is an increase of 115%. However, the stability of the stent decreases simultaneously. Meanwhile, the COF and stability of the stent have declined.
