Bending Mechanics of Ply Yarns

Abstract: In this paper, a coercive couple due to the friction between strands during two-ply yarn bending deformation is derived in terms of the strand and two-ply yarn structural factors using an energy method. The experimental and theoretical results are compared for the multifilament yarn and for various structural parameters as well.

“…Among the properties improved by yarn folding, those of the greatest importance for the performance of textile materials are yarn evenness (uniform diameter), strength (and strength variation), liveliness (the reduction of residual torque), and yarn’s surface characteristics (hairiness). The characteristics of folded yarns have drawn the attention of many scientists from the 1950s to today (Bennett & Postle, 1979; Honold & Grant, 1961; Milosavljevic, Tadic, & Stankovic, 1998; Park & Oh, 2003; Skau, Honold, & Boudreau, 1958; Xia, Xu, & Wang, 2012). However, there is a serious lack of study about the effects of folded yarns on the properties of textile materials, especially those concerned with comfort properties.…”

“…As a result, the fibers at the core of the yarn tend to have little relative movement, and the yarn as a whole resists stretching. Much research has been done in the textile community on fiber-level models of yarn and how the interactions at the fiber level lead to yarn-level behavior, particularly bending rigidity [Park and Oh 2003;Park and Oh 2006]. In particular, Choi and Tandon [2006] develop a model of a multi-ply yarn, showing that their model reasonably approximates experimental results and predicts the strain energy of bending to be approximately quadratic with respect to the curvature.…”
