Bending Performance of Prestressed Continuous Glulam Beams

Abstract: The limited transferring moment capability of Glulam (glued laminated wood) joints results in insufficient joint stiffness. Therefore, most of the connections are hinged joints. Based on the previous studies, one novel end-connection device was proposed to form prestressed continuous Glulam beams. The prestressed beams were composed of prestressed low-relaxation steel bars, the deviator block, the anchorage device, and the novel end-connection apparatus. These prestressed steel bars were tensioned by the devia… Show more

“…6. Based on the previous study [30,31], the elastic modulus of the prestressed wire is 2.0 × 10 11 N/m 2 , and the yield stress is 1.1 × 10 9 N/m 2 . And as without consideration of the axial deformation of the wire, but the shear deformation has been considered, the wire is set as a beam type, and its diameter is 0.0035 m. As for other parts, such as steel boot, steel plate, and turning block, their deformation has little effect on the mechanical properties of the beam, so they were set as rigid parts, which are completed by a much higher elastic module.…”

“…According to the Chinese standard GB50009-2012 [29] for the derivation process of the design value of the bearing capacity of the flexural member and the relevant content of the load effect combination. In terms of ultimate bearing capacity, the average value of the ultimate bearing capacity of the beams (µ R ) was obtained based on the short-term bending experiment data of prestressed glulam continuous beams conducted by the research group in the early stage [12]. The standard value of the ultimate bearing capacity (R k ) under certain reliability was obtained through the probability distribution, and then the design value (R) was obtained through the resistance partial coefficient.…”

“…The advantage was that not only was the stiffness of the joint improved through the connection device and prestress and the semi-rigid connection realized, but also the bending moment distribution was changed, to make further full use of the materials and reduce deformation. The research group carried out related research and tested the short-term flexural performance of continuous beams in the early stage [10][11][12]. The creep characteristic of timber is the key factor affecting the long-term mechanical performance of glulam continuous beams, and because of the application of prestressing, the force of the beam is more complicated.…”

“…In China, Pinus sylvestris, spruce, larch, and Douglas fir are common wood species on the engineering market that produce highly graded and relatively high-quality lumber. Many studies have explored their use as sawn or engineered timber (CLT, OSB, LVL) in the main areas of building structures [3][4][5][6]. Fastgrowing woods (such as radial pine, fir, and poplar) offer a potential application prospect in other raw woods.…”
