Beneficial Effect of Renal Denervation on Ventricular Premature Complex Induced Cardiomyopathy

Abstract: BackgroundFrequent ventricular premature complexes (VPCs) can lead to the development of dilated cardiomyopathy and sudden cardiac death. Renal artery sympathetic denervation (RDN) may protect the heart from remodeling. This study aimed to investigate the effect of frequent VPCs on structural and electrical properties and whether RDN can protect the heart from remodeling. Methods and ResultsEighteen rabbits were randomized to control (n=6), VPC (n=6), and VPC‐RDN (n=6) groups. Surgical and chemical RDNs were ap… Show more

“…The stained myocardial sections were then imaged and examined at 100× magnification, and the collagen areas of the atria were calculated as a percentage of the total atrial myocardial areas with an image analyzer (Image‐Pro Plus 6.0; Media Cybernetics, Inc, Rockville, MD), respectively. This result served as an estimate of the degree of atrial fibrosis . Figure provides a summary of the methodology.…”

“…Additionally, these animals were more readily induced into ventricular fibrillation during programmed ventricular stimulation. Importantly, the animals with PVCs plus RDN fared comparably to the controls …”

“…Importantly, the animals with PVCs plus RDN fared comparably to the controls. 13 Yu et al studied 28 dogs and sutured electrode catheters to their renal arteries. They then performed 3 hours of highfrequency stimulation at the proximal, mid, and distal portions of the renal artery.…”

“…The details were described in previous publications [13][14][15]. A total of twelve adult mongrel dogs (weight 15-25 Kg) were anesthetized with ketamine (10-20 mg/Kg) and sodium pentobarbital (30 mg/kg intravenous).…”
